Shohei Otani’s father, Toru Otani, played baseball for the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Yokohama Baseball Club after graduating from high school, but retired from baseball at the age of 24 after playing for six years.

In 1994, after his retirement, he married his wife, Kayoko Otani, a member of the MHI Badminton Club.

In 1991, when his first son, Ryuta Otani, was born, he moved to an auto body manufacturer (later merged with Toyota Motor East Japan). (He left the company in 2016)

Lives in Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture after the birth of his first daughter, Yuka Otani.
